With exactly three days to go before the start of the CAF Women’s Champions League Morocco 2024, CAFOnline puts the spotlight on WAFU B champions and tournament debutants, Edo Queens of Nigeria.

The WAFU B champions carry the hopes of Nigeria in Africa’s premier women’s club football competition set to take place in Morocco between 09 – 23 November.

How they qualified:

Edo Queens earned their place in the CAF Women’s Champions League on first attempt after winning the WAFU B qualifiers earlier this year.

The Nigerian side capped what was an exceptional performance at the WAFU qualifiers with a clinical 3-0 victory at the qualifiers played in Bouaké, Cote d’Ivoire against Ainonvi FC du Benin.

Queens’ remarkable success was powered by the exceptional performance of Emem Essien, who scored in the final and finished the competition as top scorer with a total of 5 goals.

This qualification makes Edo Queens the third Nigerian team to participate in the CAF Women's Champions League, joining Rivers Angels in the 2021 edition, as well as Bayelsa Queens who finished third in 2022.

Key Player: Emem Essien

Emem Essien was a key figure in Edo Queens’ qualifying campaign. Not only through her 5-goal contribution, but her off the ball movement and assists that helped her team in finishing as winners.

Emem’s performance has seen her rated as one of the best attackers and one to watch ahead of the finals in Morocco.

The coach: Moses Aduku

Moses Aduku instilled discipline and belief in the Nigerian side as evidently seen in their performance at the qualifiers.

His tactical approach and ability to motivate his players was vital and will come in handy when facing off against the best women’s football clubs from across the continent when the tournament officially gets underway this weekend.
