Kessy Juma (JKT Queens): “Winning is our main objective”

After a year’s absence from continental competition, JKT Queens are back on the African stage, aiming to showcase the rise of Tanzanian women’s football.

Under the guidance of head coach Kessy Juma, the team has demonstrated discipline, resilience, and ambition, qualifying for the CAF Women’s Champions League 2025 with a clear goal: to go all the way.

“Winning is our main objective,” Juma said. “This tournament is more than a sporting challenge; it’s a platform to show the strength of East African women’s football and to learn continuously.”

Lessons learned from the past

Missing the 2024 edition was a disappointment that fuelled the team’s determination.

“Not participating last year was very disappointing. Our goal has always been to compete and to showcase our players, highlight our qualities, and represent our country proudly. Being absent taught us lessons, and we doubled our efforts to qualify — which is why we are here today, ready to achieve great things.”

Preparation, cohesion, and collaboration between the technical staff and the administration were key to their successful qualification.

“Preparation is the key to achieving objectives. The collaboration between our coaching staff, administrators, and CAF was crucial in making this possible.”

Tactical and mental approach

Aware of the challenge ahead, Juma emphasizes a balanced approach.

“We know the intensity of this competition and the quality of the teams involved. We have worked hard to prepare our players both tactically and mentally, aiming to compete with the best and go for the title.”

With several players also representing the national team, squad management and scheduling are carefully coordinated.

“This is not a problem for us. The national team and league calendars are well-aligned, allowing our players to perform at their best for both club and country.”

Growth of Tanzanian women’s football

Juma highlights the role of the Tanzanian Football Federation (TFF) in developing young talent and promoting the women’s game across the country.

“The progress of women’s football in Tanzania is thanks to the Federation’s initiatives, programs, and projects aimed at nurturing young players. Their work has been remarkable in supporting and promoting the sport.”

Facing experienced clubs with high-profile players, JKT Queens are ready to compete at the highest level.

“We are aware of the strength and quality of our opponents. But we have prepared our team to compete with these solid formations. Our aim is clear: to win every match we play.”

A message to supporters

Juma calls for unity and encouragement from fans across Tanzania and East Africa:

“We invite our supporters to stand behind us. Their support and encouragement will be key to our success. We represent not only Tanzania but the entire East African region, and their backing means a lot to us.”

Beyond results: learning and ambition

“While winning is our main goal, this competition is also about growth, experience, and showing our capabilities on the continental stage,” Juma concluded.
