Last-day drama sends 15 de Agosto through to CAF Women’s Champions League, heartbreak for Ebolowa FC

Malabo erupted in celebration as host club FC 15 de Agosto of Equatorial Guinea booked their place in the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League with a commanding 3-0 win over Cameroonian champions FC Ebolowa in the UNIFFAC qualifiers.

Host nation triumphs

The Estadio de Malabo provided the perfect backdrop for a historic moment in Central African women’s football. Entering the decisive match needing a win after a tough 3-3 draw with M’Sichana earlier in the tournament, 15 de Agosto rose to the occasion.

Star striker Ana Maria Nchama, who finished the qualifiers with four goals, led the way. Combined with a cohesive and disciplined team performance, the hosts turned domestic dominance into continental qualification, joining the elite alongside defending champions TP Mazembe.

High stakes and high drama in UNIFFAC qualifiers

Over twelve days, the UNIFFAC qualifying tournament showcased tense battles and impressive displays. Matchday five was particularly decisive. AC Colombe hammered TP Electsport 7-0, with Ruth Sandra Bikounkou scoring five times (12’, 18’, 64’, 74’, 87’), complemented by Fatumata Ndiaye (2’) and Ruth Tokasi (69’).

In the main event, 15 de Agosto dismantled Ebolowa 3-0. Goals from Jessy Ornella and two from Ana Maria Nchama sealed their place in the continental competition.

The game that made history

From the first whistle, 15 de Agosto set the tone. The home crowd, a riot of national colours, roared incessantly, driving the team forward.

In the fifth minute, Jessy Ornella produced a dazzling solo effort, slicing through Ebolowa’s defence before firing an unstoppable shot into the net. The stadium erupted.

Despite Ebolowa’s resilience, 15 de Agosto’s cohesion proved decisive. In the 35th minute, Ana Maria Nchama doubled the lead with clinical precision, converting a perfectly timed pass and sending the crowd into delirium.

The hosts entered halftime 2-0 up, but the game remained tense. Then, in the 86th minute, Nchama struck again to seal a 3-0 victory. For Ebolowa, the journey ended in disappointment; the hoped-for breakthrough for Cameroonian clubs remained elusive.

For 15 de Agosto, however, the African adventure has only just begun. As UNIFFAC champions, they are now ready to test themselves against the continent’s finest in the CAF Women’s Champions League 2025, alongside the likes of reigning champions TP Mazembe.
