Masar hold two-time champions Sundowns as CAF Women's Champions League Group A opens with two goalless draws

Egyptian hosts FC Masar held two-time champions Mamelodi Sundowns to a 0-0 draw in their opening CAF Women's Champions League Egypt 2026 match on Sunday, leaving all four teams in Group A level on points and goal difference.

The South African giants were unable to avenge their 1-0 defeat by Masar at the 2024 tournament, as the Egyptian side secured another valuable result against one of Africa's most successful women's clubs.

The stalemate at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia followed an identical result between Morocco's FUS Rabat and Cameroon's Lekié Football Filles earlier in the day.

All four teams therefore finished the opening round with one point each, setting up an intriguing battle for the two semi-final places.

Sundowns frustrated by Egyptian hosts

Sundowns, winners of the competition in 2021 and 2023, entered the encounter hoping to begin their pursuit of a third continental crown with victory.

However, Masar, coached by Abdelrahman Ayed, held firm to deny the South Africans a winning start.

Sundowns' Kholosa Biyana received the only yellow card of the first half in the 33rd minute as the teams went into the interval level.

With the deadlock continuing after the break, Sundowns coach Godfrey Sapula made a series of substitutions, introducing fresh players in the 64th and 78th minutes.

Masar also made changes in the closing stages, but neither side managed to find a decisive goal.

Group A wide open

The result maintains Masar's unbeaten record against Sundowns in the competition following their victory in 2024.

It also means the South Africans must wait for their first victory on their return to the continental finals after missing the 2025 edition.

With FUS Rabat and Lekié also drawing 0-0, all four Group A teams are separated by neither points nor goals after Matchday One.

The next round of fixtures will now be crucial as the clubs compete for the two available semi-final places.
