MATCH STATS: Clash of the heavyweights in CAF Women’s Champions League Egypt 2025 semi-final

Published:

In a repeat of the CAF Women’s Champions League 2024 final, AS FAR will take on defending champions TP Mazembe at the Suez Canal Stadium on Tuesday (15h00 local time / 13h00 GMT) in the first of this year’s semi-finals.

The clubs met in the 2024 final, where TP Mazembe claimed a 1-0 win through a 10th-minute penalty converted by Marlene Kasaj.

This will be their third meeting overall. Their group-stage clash in 2024 saw Elena Obono put Mazembe ahead in the 11th minute before second-half goals from Doha El Madani and a Sanaa Mssoudy brace led AS FAR to a 3-1 victory.

This is only the second time in tournament history that finalists from one season meet again in the semi-finals the following year.

In 2022 AS FAR defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 4-0 in the final, but the South Africans avenged that result with a 1-0 victory in the 2023 semi-finals.

For AS FAR, TP Mazembe are just the second opponent they have faced three times, having also met Mamelodi Sundowns on three occasions (W1 D1 L1).

This is AS FAR’s second meeting with the defending champions. Their only previous such encounter was their 4-0 win over Sundowns in the 2022 final.

AS FAR and TP Mazembe have won one title each, AS FAR triumphing in 2022 on home soil and TP Mazembe claiming the crown in 2024.

AS FAR goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi holds the tournament record for most clean sheets (14), though she has yet to keep one against Mazembe, conceding in both previous meetings.

Three past semi-finals have gone to extra time, with two decided on penalties. Only TP Mazembe’s win over Edo Queens in 2024 was settled in open play.

Only two semi-finals in CAFWCL history have required a penalty shoot-out: Sundowns versus Malabo Kings in 2021, and Ampem Darkoa versus SC Casablanca in 2023.
