The first meeting between USFAS Bamako and AS FAR at the CAF Women’s Champions League will take place at 18h00 local time (16h00 GMT) on Tuesday in what could be a key Group A clash.
Debutants USFAS began with a 2–1 win over FC 15 de Agosto of Equatorial Guinea, while AS FAR drew 0–0 with FC Masar in their opener.
AS FAR are meeting a Malian team for the second time, having defeated AS Mande 2–0 in their final Group B game in 2023.
AS FAR are facing a debutant for the 17th time. Their record in these games stands at 12 wins, one draw, and three defeats. They faced Ampem Darkoa twice in 2023.
AS FAR have won their last six games against debutants. Their last loss in such matches was a 2–1 defeat to Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa in the opening group game in 2023.
Their two other losses against debutants came in 2021 — to Vihiga Queens of Kenya in the group stage and to Hasaacas Ladies in the semi-finals.
USFAS are the 17th different team AS FAR will have faced at the finals — no other team has met as many different opponents.
This is AS FAR’s ninth game against a team from West Africa. Their record reads: played 8, won 6, lost 2. None of those matches have ended in a draw.
Teams from Mali have lost both their previous games against North African opposition — AS Mande were beaten 3–0 by Wadi Degla in 2021 and 2–0 by AS FAR in 2023.
USFAS – Key Statistics
· Won their opening game 2–1 against FC 15 de Agosto.
· Became the first Malian team to win their opening game at the finals — AS Mande had previously lost and drawn their openers in 2021 and 2023.
· Came from a goal down to win: after conceding in the 42nd minute, second-half goals from Maimouna Traoré (69’, penalty) and Awa Diarra (82’) turned the game around.
· First Malian team to concede first and come back to win at the finals.
· If they avoid defeat, they will be the second Malian side to go unbeaten in their first two games — AS Mande drew and won in their first two in 2023.
· Victory would make them the first Malian team to win successive matches at the finals.
· Avoiding defeat would also make them the first Malian debutant to remain unbeaten in their first two games — AS Mande lost both openers in 2021.
· In second group matches, AS Mande lost 3–0 to Hasaacas Ladies in 2021 and won 3–0 against Ampem Darkoa in 2023.
· The longest unbeaten run by a Malian team at the finals is three matches (AS Mande: one win, two draws between 2021 and 2023). USFAS could equal that if they remain unbeaten through the group stage.
