Tlamelo Pheresi (Gaborone United): “We are hungry for titles”

History has been made in Botswanan women’s football as Gaborone United became the first club from the country to qualify for the CAF Women’s Champions League group stage, following a triumphant performance at the COSAFA 2025 qualifying tournament.

Leading the charge is captain and goalkeeper Tlamelo Pheresi, whose consistency and leadership have become the cornerstone of the team’s rise on the continental stage.

After narrowly missing qualification in 2024, losing in the final to UWC on penalties (1-1, 9-8), Gaborone United returned stronger, driven by lessons learned from the previous year.

“Last years’ experience gave us hunger and maturity, and we used it as fuel to come back stronger,” Pheresi said. “Winning the tournament this year is incredible because it shows how much we’ve grown as a team.”

Experience and unity make the difference

Gaborone United’s success at COSAFA was built on tactical discipline, mental strength, and team cohesion. Pheresi highlights the factors behind this year’s achievement:

“The biggest difference this year was confidence and experience. We knew what to expect — the intensity, the pressure, and the competition. We were calm, organized, and mentally strong. Our preparation was top-level thanks to our coaches and management. We stayed united from the first whistle to the last.”

Individually, Pheresi excelled, conceding only three goals in the tournament and earning the Best Goalkeeper award.

“It’s a huge honour. But this trophy isn’t just mine — it belongs to the entire team.

My defenders were amazing, and everyone fought for each other. This recognition gives me confidence for the CAF Women’s Champions League, where the level will be even higher.”

This milestone is not just a team achievement — it is a historic moment for the country. Gaborone United is the first Botswanan club to reach the CAF Women’s Champions League, signalling a new era for women’s football in the nation.

“Being part of the team that made history for our country is indescribable,” Pheresi said.

“It’s a dream many of us have worked on for years. This is not only a victory for Gaborone United; it’s a way to put Botswana on the women’s football map. I am very proud to be part of this chapter.”

Looking forward: the CAF Women’s Champions League

For Pheresi and her teammates, the CAF Women’s Champions League represents opportunity, progression, and the power of perseverance.

“It’s the biggest stage for women’s club football in Africa, and being part of it means we’ve earned our place among the best. Personally, it’s a chance to test myself at the highest level and show what I can do.”

Her objectives for the tournament are clear: lead her defence, keep clean sheets, and help the team advance as far as possible.

“I want to play with confidence, give my best in every match, and help my team succeed. I also aim to learn from this experience, improve as a player, and maybe one day play professionally outside Botswana.”

When asked about goalkeepers who inspire her, Pheresi mentions local and international role models.

“I’ve always admired Sedilame Bosija from Mamelodi Sundowns for her leadership and composure. Internationally, Hannah Hampton from Chelsea inspires me — she is bold, communicative, and consistent. Both motivate me to keep improving every day.”
