Burundi earn maiden WAFCON ticket after double against Djibouti

Burundi booked a ticket for the first time to the TotalEnergies Women's Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2022 following a 5-0 second leg, last qualifying round win over Djibouti in Ngozi on Monday.

The Burundians went into the second leg on a high, after a huge 6-1 first leg home win thanks to braces from Rukiya Bizimana and Sandrine Niyonkuru and a goal each from Asha Djafari and Uwimana Aniella at Stade Urukundo.

On the same pitch on Monday, the Burundians continued from where left off in fine form as they stormed to an early lead courtesy of Bizimana's brilliant finish in the ninth minute.

The helpless hosts managed to hold on a little until Aniella doubled the lead for her goal-hungry visitors, with her strike six minutes from half time break.

On return from recess, the visiting side maintained their ruthless form as Bizimana bagged her second and her side's third of the match in the 54th minute.

The struggling neighbours were further rattled when Aniella struck twice in the closing stages to complete her treble with the fourth and fifth goal for Burundi to wrap up the one-sided contest in a remarkable fashion.

With an away and 11-1 second round aggregate triumph, the Swallows have completed the double over their CECAFA rivals and finally secured their long-sought maiden qualification to WAFCON.
