Burundi stop Zanzibar 5-0 in Cecafa Senior Women’s Challenge Cup opening tie

Burundi has kick started the 2019 Cecafa Senior Women’s Challenge Cup in style with a 5-0 win over Zanzibar. The game played at the Chamanzi Stadium, home of Azam Football Club saw Saidi Sakina score a first half brace to give Burundi a 2-0 lead.

Zanzibar started the match with a defensive approach, but Burundi pressed and took the lead after 24 minutes. A goal hungry Sakina made it 2-0 after 26 minutes.

Ten minutes into the second half Sandrine Niyonkuru made it 3-0 before Zanzibar’s Aziza Mwadini netted an own goal. Aniella Umimana made it 5-0 after 88 minutes.

“I am happy to score two goals and help my team pick a win in the opening match of the tournament. We need to keep working hard in the other games,” said Sakina after the match.

The win takes Burundi top of Group A before defending champions Tanzania face Debut making South Sudan.

The regional tournament which kicked off on Saturday will climax on November 25th with the play-off for third place and the final.
