Equatorial Guinea wins first ever UNIFFAC Women's championship

Host Equatorial Guinea were crowned champions of the inaugural edition of the Union of Football Federations of Central Africa (UNIFFAC) Women’s tournament after beating DR Congo 4-2 on post-match penalties in the final in Mongomo on Friday (28 February 2020).

The tightly contested final was forced into penalties after a barren draw in regulation time and the home side ensured they carried the day with pitch-perfect penalties to emerge victorious in the five-nation tournament.

Hosts Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, DR Congo, Chad and Central African Republic participated at the tournament which was hosted in the cities of Ebibeyin and Mongomo.

The Nzalang Nacional not only took the overall crown from the competition but also bagged individual awards. Celestina Mansa Besecu was voted best player of the tournament, while teammate Salomé Nke bagged the golden boot after scoring four goals.

“This victory is the reward of all the hard work we have put in. I am really proud of my teammates and I am happy to see that we have started a project that promises to be more exciting,”Nke, also the Equatorial Guinean skipper said after the tournament.
