Broos acknowledges daunting World Cup opener as South Africa draw hosts Mexico

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos says Bafana Bafana must prepare for one of the most demanding starts to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being drawn against co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium.

The 2010 World Cup hosts were placed in Group A alongside Mexico, South Korea and the winner of the Denmark vs Northern Ireland UEFA play-off.

The draw hands South Africa a mixed assignment: a challenging opener in one of football’s most intimidating venues, followed by fixtures that present both opportunity and risk.

Broos, who led Bafana Bafana to a third-place finish at the 2023 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, believes his team must strike a balance between realism and ambition.

Mexico, buoyed by home support and familiarity with conditions, are expected to dictate the tempo of the group.

“It’s not an easy group for us. First of all, we will face the hosts in the opening game, at the Azteca stadium, and it will be very difficult for us there,” Broos said.

South Korea, a regular knockout-stage contender, will offer a different tactical test, while the European play-off winner — likely Denmark — adds further complexity.

For Broos, navigating these contrasts will determine whether South Africa can push for a first World Cup knockout appearance since 2010.

“On the other side, we also have South Korea, that’s possible [to beat].

“But we are a little bit disappointed that we are going to also have the winner of the Denmark and Northern Ireland play-off. It will probably be Denmark, which is a big team.

“We will do our best, and let’s see where we end.”

Despite the difficulty of the group, the Belgian coach insists South Africa will compete with full commitment.

He stressed that his side must approach each match believing in their ability to unsettle more fancied opponents, while acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead.

Broos’ comments reflected both frustration at the draw and determination to make the most of the opportunity. He said the group presents obstacles they must face head-on.
