Bubista encourages Cape Verde to keep identity ahead of World Cup debut against former world champions Spain

Cape Verde head coach Pedro Leitao Brito says his side is determined to remain true to their identity when they take on Spain in their historic FIFA World Cup opener on Monday at 16h00 GMT.

The Blue Sharks will make their long-awaited debut on football's biggest stage in Atlanta, becoming one of Africa's 10 representatives at the expanded global showpiece after a memorable qualification campaign.

Awaiting them is a daunting first assignment against one of the tournament favourites, but Bubista insists his players are focused on delivering a performance that reflects both the team's character and the spirit of the nation they represent.

"We want to show everything we have prepared for. We want to compete and bring our identity," said the Cape Verde mentor.

"Being able to play these three matches with courage and determination is important for us, showing the world who we are as a team, but more importantly as a country."

Cape Verde's rise has been one of African football's most compelling stories in recent years. While respectful of the challenge posed by Spain, Bubista believes his side can rise to the occasion.

"We are aware of the difficulties, and we know how strong our opponents are. However, I believe the match will be competitive on the pitch," he said.

Cape Verde captain, Ryan Mendes who will be key for the debutants is one of the most experienced figures in the squad. The dangerous forward will lead his country into uncharted territory as Cape Verde embark on their maiden World Cup campaign.

"This will be a different experience, but I am as determined as ever. I want to work hard for my country and do it together with my teammates," said Mendes.

"I will try to bring joy to the people of Cape Verde. I feel fortunate to be here at the World Cup. There is no greater stage than this."

With 22 goals to his name and being the most experienced player in the squad, Mendes’ influence and experience will be vital for the Blue Sharks on Monday.

With further Group H fixtures against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay to follow, Cape Verde know their World Cup journey is only beginning. However before looking ahead, the Blue Sharks have their sights firmly set on Monday's landmark encounter against the 2010 world champions.
