FIFA World Cup 2026: Elephants determined to finally break Round-of-16 barrier
After missing the last two editions of the FIFA World Cup, Côte d’Ivoire make their long-awaited return to football’s biggest stage on Sunday when they face Ecuador in Philadelphia in their opening Group E fixture. Backed by a talented new generation, the reigning African champions are eager to correct a long-standing anomaly in their World Cup history.
Could the fourth attempt finally be the right one?
That is the question on the minds of Ivorians as the Elephants prepare to step onto the pitch at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. In their previous three World Cup appearances (2006, 2010 and 2014), Côte d’Ivoire’s celebrated generation led by Didier Drogba never managed to progress beyond the group stage.
It is a barrier that head coach Emerse Faé and his emerging squad are determined to break, starting with Sunday’s clash against Ecuador.
“This first match is crucial,” said right-back Guéla Doué. “We know that winning our opening game would put us in a strong position for the rest of the tournament. We are approaching this match with maximum focus and determination.”
Fearless new generation
Focus will be essential, but this Ivorian side also possesses youthful energy and enthusiasm. Described by Doué as “young, ambitious and fearless”, the squad enters the tournament without a single player having previously experienced a FIFA World Cup.
Rather than creating anxiety, the unknown is generating excitement, as Hoffenheim winger Bazoumana Touré explained.
“When the match kicks off, I know I’ll get goosebumps,” said the 20-year-old. “Playing at the World Cup is the ultimate dream. We grew up watching players like Gervinho and Didier Drogba represent our country. Now it is our turn to make the nation proud.”

A physical test against Ecuador
Côte d’Ivoire’s return to the global stage begins with a demanding challenge against an Ecuadorian side renowned for its organization and defensive discipline.
“It will be a physical and difficult match that could be decided by small details,” warned Faé. “But when it comes to intensity and commitment, I have no concerns. My players are ready for the challenge.”
Touré shares his coach’s confidence and believes the Elephants have the qualities required to trouble the South Americans.
“They are a strong team physically, but so are we,” he said. “We have players who can unlock any defence. Everyone is in top condition, and I think Ecuador may be surprised by our aggression and energy.”

Threats across the pitch
Unpredictability has become one of the defining features of this Côte d’Ivoire side.
The Elephants sent a strong message during their preparation campaign, recording victories against Scotland (1-0), Korea Republic (4-0) and France (2-1). Even more impressive was the fact that seven different players accounted for the team’s seven goals.
“As long as our defensive structure is solid, I like to give my players freedom in attack,” explained Faé. “With modern analysis tools, opponents can study every detail of your game. To succeed at this level, you have to be unpredictable and creative.”
