CAF and Afreximbank Announce Strategic Partnership to Empower African Youth and Advance CAF African Schools Football Championship

The Confédération Africain de Football (“CAF”) and African Export-Import Bank, Afreximbank, have announced a strategic partnership aimed at advancing  CAF African Schools Schools Football Championship. 

The agreement was signed in Cairo by Véron Mosengo-Omba, Secretary General (CAF) and Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice President, Intra-African Trade and Export Development Bank (Afreximbank).

The new partnership will reach beyond the CAF African Schools Football Championship leveraging on Afreximbank capacity and experience in the African continent in financing and infrastructure development. 

The CAF African Schools Football Championship was established in 2021 by CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe in line with the vision to Grow and Develop Football in Africa in particular amongst the youth.

Since then, over two million boys and girls below from over 45 African countries have participated in the programme.

Mosengo-Omba thanked  the Motsepe Foundation for the financial support that has enabled the CAF African Schools Football Championship to succeed and make meaningful contribution. The Motsepe Foundation had donated USD 10 million to the CAF African Schools Football Championship.

As part of the agreement, Afreximbank will contribute to support the CAF African Schools Football Championship, CAF’s flagship grassroots programme designed to nurture young talent, promote gender equality, and instill values of teamwork and discipline among Africa’s youth.

Speaking at the launch, Mosengo-Omba said: “The CAF African Football Schools Championship has been one of the success stories of the  CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe era.  The Programme has not only touched over two million boys and girls and contributed significantly in the growth and development of grassroot football. We are excited to welcome Afreximbank to the CAF Family and we look forward to working with them in many projects. “

Speaking at the ceremony, Kanayo Awani noted: “Sports is a powerful enabler of youth empowerment, regional integration, and economic opportunity. Through this partnership with CAF, Afreximbank reaffirms its commitment to unlocking the full potential of Africa’s sports and creative industries, turning talent and passion into sustainable enterprise and export value. Our goal is to ensure that African athletes compete and triumph on African soil, supported by facilities that reflect the continent’s excellence and ambition.”
