Zambia are the new Cosafa Under-20 champions. They beat the previous title holder, Mozambique 1-0 in Manzini, Eswatini to register their record 12th title in the age division in the Southern region.
The competition also served as the qualifying tournament of the TotalEnergies Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations which will take place in Egypt in 2023. Both Young Chipolopolo and the Mambas have qualified for the continental showpiece which is also the qualifying tournament of the 2023 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Indonesia.
The top four teams in Egypt will go onto represent the continent at the World Cup.
Kingston Mutandwa scored the winning goal for Zambia in the first half of the match and were able to fend off Mozambique who had won back titles under their coach Dario Monteiro. Chipolopolo had an impressive tournament and only conceded once in all their five matches in the competition. Angola, who finished fourth, is the only team that put one past goalkeeper Jeban Tembo.
Meanwhile South Africa walked away with the bronze medal winning 4-2 in penalties beating the Palanquinhas after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time.
