Engin Firat steps down as Kenya national team coach

Engin Firat has officially resigned as the head coach of Kenya’s Harambee Stars, ending a three-year tenure that saw mixed results.
His decision comes in the wake of Kenya’s failure to qualify for the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Firat’s resignation, confirmed in a statement by FKF President Hussein Mohammed, highlighted the ongoing challenges facing Kenyan football.
“We acknowledge receipt of Engin Firat’s resignation and are committed to addressing this development promptly,” Mohammed stated.
“This transition may create uncertainty, but we reaffirm our commitment to rebuilding Kenyan football with stability and progress.”
The FKF also disclosed that unpaid salary arrears contributed to the coach's departure.
Mohammed emphasized that resolving these issues remains a priority, while also committing to appointing a replacement after thorough consultations.
Firat, who took charge of the Harambee Stars in 2021, leaves behind a mixed legacy.

Under his management, the team played 23 matches, securing seven wins, seven draws, and nine losses.
Notable highlights included a 2-1 victory over Namibia, but there were also major setbacks, such as a crushing 5-0 defeat to Mali in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Structural issues, such as inadequate infrastructure and a lack of home games, were cited by Firat as barriers to success.
With Firat’s departure, Kenyan football enters a transitional period. FKF is reportedly considering several candidates for the coaching role as they look to prepare the team for the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) in February 2025.
