Gomaa, Madjer, Kalaba and Malango confirmed as Draw Assistants for TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup Quarter-Final Draws

The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has confirmed four prominent African football figures as draw assistants for the 2024/25 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final draws, scheduled to take place on Thursday, 20 February in Doha, Qatar.
The four selected legends are Wael Gomaa (Egypt), Rabah Madjer (Algeria), Rainford Kalaba (Zambia), and Ben Malango (DR Congo).
These distinguished individuals, each with an impressive track record in African football, will assist in conducting the much-anticipated draw, which will map out the path to the finals for the remaining eight teams in each tournament.
The draw ceremony will be hosted at beIN SPORTS' world-class studios at the network’s MENA headquarters in Doha.
The TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup draw will commence at 16h00 Cairo time (14h00 GMT/17h00 East Africa Time/MECCA), followed by the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League draw at 17h00 Cairo time (15h00 GMT/18h00 East Africa Time/MECCA). WAEL GOMAA (EGYPT)
Wael Gomaa, a legendary Egyptian international, is regarded as one of the best African defenders of all time. Known for his leadership and defensive prowess, Gomaa enjoyed a highly successful career with Al Ahly SC, where he won an unprecedented six CAF Champions League titles. Internationally, he was a key figure for Egypt's national team, winning three TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles in 2006, 2008, and 2010. His inclusion as a draw assistant highlights his enduring influence on African football.
RABAH MADJER (ALGERIA)
Algerian football icon Rabah Madjer is celebrated both for his exploits as a player and his contributions to African football. Madjer famously scored the winning goal that secured Algeria’s first-ever TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1990, and his iconic backheel goal for FC Porto in the 1987 UEFA Champions League final remains one of football’s most memorable moments. Recognised as one of Africa’s greatest forwards, Madjer’s presence adds historical significance to the draw.
RAINFORD KALABA (ZAMBIA)
Rainford Kalaba is renowned for his achievements both at the club and international levels. The former Zambian international midfielder played a crucial role in Zambia’s historic triumph at the 2012 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). At club level, Kalaba enjoyed great success with TP Mazembe of DR Congo, winning the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and numerous domestic titles. His experience and success in African football make him a fitting addition to the panel of draw assistants.
BEN MALANGO (DR CONGO)
Ben Malango is a former DR Congo international known for his goal-scoring exploits in African club competitions. Malango won the CAF Confederation Cup twice, first with TP Mazembe in 2017 and later with Raja Casablanca of Morocco in 2021. His impressive performances in both competitions have cemented his reputation as one of Africa’s leading strikers, and his involvement as a draw assistant underscores his impact on the continent’s football scene.
THE DRAW
The draw ceremony will be hosted by beIN SPORTS presenter Mohammed Saadoun Al-Kuwari.
The quarter-finals of both competitions will be played over two legs, with the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League fixtures scheduled for 1 April and 8 April 2025, and the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup matches set for 2 April and 9 April 2025.
The draw will also determine the semi-final matchups, adding to the anticipation for both tournaments.
The draw will feature the reigning champions of both competitions: Al Ahly SC of Egypt, the defending champions of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, and Zamalek SC, also from Egypt, who currently hold the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup title.
