Habib Beye: Senegalese coach makes history at French club Rennes

Former Senegal international defender Habib Beye has made an immediate impact as head coach of French club Rennes, becoming one of the few African managers to take charge of a club in Europe’s top five leagues.
The 47-year-old, who played for the Senegal national team in its glory days, has started his tenure in impressive fashion, guiding Rennes to two consecutive victories in Ligue 1.
His feat places him in the club’s history books, as he becomes only the third coach to win his first two matches in charge—joining Kalman Szekany (1932) and Julien Stéphan (2018).
Beye, who previously managed French lower-tier side Red Star FC, is proud to be a trailblazer for African coaches in European football.
“A worthy representative”
Reflecting on his new role and the significance of his appointment, Beye said he carries the aspirations of both Senegal and Africa in his work.
“We have a continent that is full of talent and that shines constantly,” he said on AfricaSoccer.com .
“My work as a man is what my father passed on to me, and today, I am a worthy representative of France, Senegal, and the entire continent.”
His appointment comes at a time when African coaches are still underrepresented in top European leagues, despite the continent’s rich footballing heritage and the success of its players at the highest level.
Beye, who enjoyed a distinguished playing career as a right-back for clubs including Olympique Marseille and Newcastle United, has gradually built his reputation as a coach.
His time at French second tier side Red Star FC saw him gain recognition for his tactical approach and leadership.
With Rennes currently striving for a strong finish in Ligue 1, Beye’s early success has raised expectations among fans and club officials alike.
If he continues on this trajectory, he could pave the way for more African coaches to secure opportunities in top European football.
