Stat Attack: Al Ahly

Numbers you might not know. This week we focus the spotlight on the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League holders Al Ahly of Egypt.
9 – The number of times Al Ahly have represented Africa at the FIFA Club World Cup. The Cairo giants will be one of the four African representatives at the expanded 2025 edition in the United States. Al Ahly have won bronze four times.
12 – The record number of times that Al Ahly have won the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, which includes four triumphs in the last five editions. Their first success came in 1982 when they beat Ghana’s Asante Kotoko 4-1 on aggregate in the final with three of the goals scored by Mahmoud Al Khatib. The clubs with the next highest number of Champions League titles are TP Mazembe and Zamalek, who have won five times each.
22 – The total number of Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) interclub finals that Al Ahly have participated in. They have been in 17 Champions League deciders with 12 triumphs and five times finishing as runners-up. In the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, they won the 2014 final while they compete in four finals of the now defunct CAF Cup Winners’ Cup between 1984 and 1993 and won them all.
27 – The number of unbeaten games for Al Ahly in the Champions League since they last lost in the competition in March 2023 away against South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns. Despite that setback in the group phase they went on to win the 2022-23 edition and successfully defend their title in the last campaign. This season, they have played two preliminary round and three group matches without defeat.
44 – Al Ahly have won a record 44 Egyptian Premier League titles, more than three times more than the next highest, their great Cairo rivals Zamalek (14). The team with the most championships after that is Ismaily with three, showing the dominance of Ahly and Zamalek in the Egyptian league. Between them they have won 58 of the 65 championships played.
