Stat Attack: TP Mazembe

Numbers you might not know. This week we focus the spotlight on the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League competitors TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
3 – The number of times that TP Mazembe have represented Africa at the FIFA Club World Cup, with participation in the tournaments of 2009, 2010 and 2015. In 2010, they became the first African club to reach the final, beating Internacional of Brazil in the semi-final in Abu Dhabi before losing to Italy’s Inter Milan.
5 – The number of times that Mazembe have won the CAF Champions League, making them the joint second most successful club in the competition’s history. Mazembe was the first team to successfully defend the African Champions Cup after success in 1967 and 1968, and they were runners-up the following two years. It was then a long wait until they won again in 2009, 2010 and last in 2015.
14 – The number of times Mazembe have qualified for the group phase of the CAF Champions League since their debut appearance in 2001. They have got past the group phase and into the knockout stages on xx occasions, winning in 2009, 2010 and 2015, finish runners-up in xx, semi-finalists in 2002, 2012, 2014, 2019 and 2023-34 and quarter-finalists in 2018 and 2019-20.
86 – The number of years since the club was created in November 1939, making it among the oldest on the continent. It was originally a club for boys from the Institut Saint-Boniface in Élisabethville (now Lubumbashi) and was first called Saint Georges FC. Later it became FC Engelbert and after winning the first national league title in 1966, Tout Puissant (Almighty) was added to the club's name.
301 – The number of matches Mazembe have played in continental club competition ahead of Friday’s Champions League clash away against MC Alger in Group A. They have 151 victories, 81 draws and 69 defeats with 457 goals scored and 260 conceded.
