Road to TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Group Stage mapped out

The draw for the preliminary rounds of TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2021-2022 took place on Friday at CAF Headquarters in Cairo.

Al Ahly, winner of the 2020-2021 edition, will only enter the second round to face the winner of the double header between US Gendarmerie Nationale (Niger) and Le Messager de Ngozi (Burundi).

Raja AC (Morocco), title holders of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, will also have to wait until the second round to enter the competition.

In total, ten teams were exempted from the first round: Al Ahly and Raja, as well as Esperance de Tunis (Tunisia), Zamalek (Egypt), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), Simba SC (Tanzania), Horoya AC (Guinea), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Etoile Sportive du Sahel (Tunisia), Wydad (Morocco).

Back on the African scene after a ten-year absence, Fovu FC de Baham (Cameroon) will face Angola’s Atletico Petroleus in the first round.

The first round, which kicks off on 10 September 2021, will be played in 44 matches divided into two legs: home and away. The aggregate winners will progress to the second round.
