Ugandan giants Vipers get new coach ahead of Raja clash

Uganda side Vipers have named Alex Isabirye as their new coach ahead of this week's TotalEnergies Champions League match against Raja Casablanca.

The former Uganda international was unveiled in Kampala on Sunday, just days after sacking their Brazilian trainer Beto Bianchi.

Isabirye will be in charge of Vipers when they face the Moroccans who are the leaders of Group C on Saturday at the St. Marys Stadium in Kitende.

He joins the Vipers from their Uganda Premier League rivals Bidco FC who are currently third on the log.

Isabirye, who also guided Somali Premier League side Horseed FC to win the 2020 Dauda Cup in Somalia, said he is ready for the challenge.

“I am very excited to be here and look forward to meeting and working with the exciting group of players and developing a team and culture that our amazing fans can be proud of,” he said.

The former attacking midfielder was also incharge when Bidco were eliminated 1-0 on aggregate by Egypt’s Future FC in the first Preliminary round of the 2022/2023 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.

Under Bianchi, Vipers lost their opening match 5-0 away to Raja Casablanca, and settled for a goalless draw against Guinean side Horoya in Kitende.

Vipers lost the next two matches with identical scores 1-0 to Tanzania’s Simba SC home and away.

Isabirye will now be incharge of Vipers in the remaining two group matches against Raja Casablanca and away to Horoya.

Isabirye will also have the task of trying to steer Vipers to retain the Uganda Premier League title and also win the Uganda FA Cup.
