Nigeria defender and match winner Solomon Agbalaka says the Flying Eagles deserved their hard fought 1-0 victory over hosts Egypt at the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The left-back powered home the winner twenty minutes from time to secure their first points in Group A following their defeat to Senegal in their opening match of the tournament.

The West Africans failed to qualify for the last edition of the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Mauritania two years ago.

Bosso Ladan's weathered the Pharaohs early storm in Cairo to punish Mahmud Gaber's wasteful team.

The hosts created numerous chances but failed to make it count in front of their passionate supporters but the defender insists they deserve the victory.

"We deserved to win," Solomon told journalists after he was awarded the Man of the Match.

"Worked very hard, so I would like to thank my coach and all my colleagues for their efforts.

"I'm very happy with the result of the match. The match was not easy as we were facing the hosts."
