FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers: Deadlock in Dakar and Kampala ahead of decisive second legs

Published:

The first-leg matches of the second round of qualifiers for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup produced finely balanced outcomes. Senegal and Cameroon played out to a tactical goalless draw in Dakar (0-0), while Uganda and Kenya shared the spoils in an entertaining 1-1 draw in Kampala.

Senegal 0-0 Cameroon

At the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor, Senegal and Cameroon battled to a goalless stalemate. Backed by their home supporters, the Senegalese side approached the encounter with intensity in an effort to unsettle the Cameroonian defence.

Well organised and composed in duels, the visitors neutralised Senegal’s attacking threats in the final third while remaining dangerous on the count. Despite chances for both teams in the second half, neither side was able to find the breakthrough.

The result leaves the tie wide open. Senegal, who eliminated Tunisia in the previous round, will now have to seek qualification away from home. Everything will be decided in the return leg on 30 May in Yaoundé, where Cameroon will enjoy home advantage as they look to seal a place in the third round.

Uganda 1-1 Kenya

Scorers: Shadia Nabirye (12’) / Emily Adhiambo (60’)

Played at the FUFA Stadium in Kampala, the East African derby ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw, handing Kenya a valuable result away from home.

Uganda’s Teen Cranes made the perfect start by opening the scoring in the 12th minute.

Following a dangerous run down the flank and an initial effort saved by the Kenyan goalkeeper, Shadia Nabirye reacted quick at the far post to slot the ball into the net.

Stung by the early setback, Kenya raised their level after the restart. The equaliser arrived on the hour mark through Emily Adhiambo. The substitute capitalised on a misplaced clearance by the Ugandan goalkeeper outside her area before unleashing a superb long-range strike from nearly 40 metres into an empty net.

Kenya nearly snatched victory late in the game, but the score remained unchanged.

Thanks to their crucial away goal, the Junior Starlets head into the second leg on 30 May in Nairobi in a strong position to secure qualification.
