LA 2028 Olympic Qualifiers: Comoros run riot with 17 goals as Mauritius edge Djibouti
The African qualifiers for the Los Angeles 2028 Women's Olympic Football Tournament burst into life on Friday with a tale of two vastly different contests as Comoros produced a record-breaking goal spree while Mauritius secured a hard-fought first-leg advantage over Djibouti.
In one of the most emphatic performances seen in recent continental qualifying history, Comoros virtually sealed their place in the next round after dismantling Sudan 17-0 in a one-sided encounter.
Meanwhile, Mauritius looked set for a comfortable victory before a dramatic late strike from Djibouti ensured their tie remains finely balanced heading into the return leg.

Comoros delivered a breathtaking attacking display to all but secure progression to the next stage of the qualifiers.
The Coelacanths wasted little time asserting their dominance, with Fatima Saïd Madjiri opening the scoring after just eight minutes before the floodgates opened.
What followed was a relentless attacking exhibition as Comoros overwhelmed Sudan with wave after wave of pressure, showcasing their superior movement, finishing and creativity throughout the contest.
Nine different players found the back of the net in a remarkable team performance that highlighted both the depth and quality within the Comorian squad.
Haloua Ahamada emerged as the standout performer, scoring four times in a devastating display. Aliya Saïd, Shaima Boina Ali and Faïza Houmadi each contributed braces, while several others joined the scoresheet as Sudan struggled to contain the relentless attacks.
By the final whistle, Comoros had recorded a commanding 17-goal victory that leaves them firmly in control of the tie and on the verge of advancing to the next round of the qualifiers.
Mauritius 2-1 Djibouti
Scorers: Eloisha Clair (1'), Julie Gopal (90+7') / Bamlak Geremew (38')
If the opening fixture was a showcase of dominance, the clash between Mauritius and Djibouti delivered tension and drama until the very last moments.
Mauritius made the perfect start when Eloisha Clair struck inside the opening minute to hand the hosts an early advantage and energise the home crowd.
The Mauritians continued to control large portions of the contest and appeared to strengthen their grip on the match when Bamlak Geremew doubled the lead in the 38th minute.
With a two-goal cushion and the clock winding down, Mauritius looked destined to carry a comfortable advantage into the second leg.
However, Djibouti refused to surrender.
Deep into stoppage time, Julie Gopal found the breakthrough that her side desperately needed, reducing the deficit in the 97th minute and injecting fresh life into the tie.
The late goal transformed the complexion of the contest, ensuring Djibouti travel into the return leg with renewed belief and realistic hopes of overturning the deficit.
While Mauritius will remain favourites after securing victory, the narrow margin means qualification remains far from decided, setting up an intriguing second leg between the two nations.
