Football makes Ethiopia kit manager Awgechew a globetrotter

Ethiopia national team kits manager at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) Hailu Awgechew has revealed football has made him a globetrotter as the game has taken him to more than 15 African countries.

While the focus is firmly on players and their coaches, other key stakeholders in the making of the team are not visible to the public but their roles are crucial.

The work of the team extends from outside the pitch to the changing rooms that are permanently used before matches by the players and coaches.

The kit managers, whose roles are considered both effective and important at the level of any club or national team, gets no public recognition for their job.

Awgechew has spoken to CAFonline about his role in the Ethiopian national team as the equipment manager that has taken him places where other can only dream of.

During the conversation, he spoke about his experiences especially because his job allows a him to work in close collaboration with the national team of his country.

"My name is Hailu Awgechew.I have been doing this job for years. I am happy with this job, and I love football. That's why I am working here," the soft spoken Ethiopia kit manager said.

"The happiest moments I remember is when Ethiopia qualified for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. This job in football is open to everyone, no secrets."

A key man in the national team, Awgechew works extra hard and he is proud of his commitment to his professional duty with the Ethiopian national team for the past four years.

"I have travelled to more than 15 countries with the Ethiopian national team and Algeria is the favourite country among them."
