Guinea names 26-man provisional CHAN squad, camping set for Senegal

As the countdown to the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) narrows, Guinea’s local-based national team has begun laying the groundwork for a tournament that carries more emotional weight than usual.

With the senior national team failing to qualify for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), all eyes have shifted to the Syli Locaux to restore national pride.

The Guinean Football Federation released its 26-man provisional squad, marking the start of what they hope will be a transformative campaign.

Rather than staying home, Guinea has chosen to prepare abroad. A training camp begins this Wednesday, July 2, in Senegal — a bold move aimed at giving the squad competitive exposure.

As part of their warm-up, Guinea will play back-to-back friendlies against reigning CHAN champions Senegal on July 4 and 7 in Dakar, a challenge that should test the team’s resolve ahead of Group C battles against Algeria, South Africa, Uganda, and Niger.

But the squad announcement has not passed without controversy. Missing from the list is Moussa Moise Camara, the top scorer in Guinea’s top-tier league.

Coach Souleymane Camara’s decision to omit the prolific forward has sparked speculation and stirred debate among fans and pundits alike, though no official explanation has been offered.

The squad blends players from Guinea’s biggest domestic clubs such as Horoya AC, Hafia FC, and Milo FC, with a few surprises from lesser-known outfits like Renaissance FC and SAG.

The pressure is high, but the Syli Locaux now carry the hopes of a nation eager to reclaim continental relevance.
