Uganda names 41-man provisional CHAN squad

Published:

Uganda’s dream of finally progressing past the group stage at the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) has started in earnest as the country’s football federation has unveiled a 41-man provisional squad for the tournament.

Co-hosting the championship for the first time alongside neighbours Kenya and Tanzania, the Cranes are keen to capitalise on home advantage when the tournament kicks off on 2 August 2025.

Head coaches Fred Muhumuza and Morley Byekwaso will lead the charge, and all selected players are locally based, as per tournament regulations.

The squad features stars exclusively from the Uganda Premier League—except for surprise inclusion James Bogere of Masaka Sunshine FC, a regional league outfit.

Preparations are already underway, with non-residential training commencing.

Sessions are scheduled daily at 9am, as the technical team begins shaping the group into a competitive unit ahead of their opener.

Grouped in what has been described as one of CHAN’s toughest draws, Uganda will face Algeria, South Africa, Guinea, and Niger in Group C.

Their first match, against Algeria, will be played at the newly refurbished Namboole Stadium on 4 August.

Despite the daunting fixture list, the mood in camp is optimistic.

Uganda’s inability to progress beyond the group stage in previous editions remains a motivating factor for the team, especially with thousands of fans expected to rally behind them on home soil.

This year’s edition offers a unique opportunity for the Cranes to break new ground—not just through results, but by building a strong foundation for local football development and future continental competitiveness.
